Two 18th century square pianos

A square piano by Matthew and William (Matthaeus and Guiliel) Stodart,
Wardour Street, Soho. 1792

Part of the mechanism was vandalised during the 1960's but it has been restored to playing
condition, although it would be improved by the replacement of the fibre damper springs by whalebones.
The ivory keyboard is original.Of the original 3 pedals, two have been retained: mute and damper pedals.
The swell pedal is missing. There is an almost identical piano in the collection at Fenton House, Hampstead.
The typical late 18th century case is in excellent condition. This piano must be regarded
as an ornament - an attractive one - with some possibility of playing simple pieces.
